The Client
Data analyst Alan Wolk at https://tvrev.com/ introduces the TV Data Initiative as follows:
TV’s shift to streaming has allowed the industry to collect a vast amount of data…The TV Data Initiative is a consortium of companies looking to develop clear definitions, best practices and other guidelines to make the TV data ecosystem more user friendly.
The Challenge
The TV Data Initiative team—Media Consultant Jon Watts, Media Data Specialist Jonathan Steuer and Industry Analyst Alan Wolk, quoted above—wanted a logo that would convey the excitement of a new industry field and introduce a visual concept of data, while keeping a sense of stability. They liked red as a vibrant, active color that suited the energy they wanted to project and they wanted it to be readable online at a number of different sizes.
The Solution
I came up with the idea of using a black rectangle in a 16:9 ratio to represent a TV screen, and the clients liked this. I experimented with both different background textures—to represent either TV static or data—and different type treatments. We decided to go with an image that represented data; I found this array of dots that conveyed order and movement, and converted the image to black-and-white for a feeling of stability. I set the type right-justified, to match the visual “zoom” of the data texture. For the final version I used all lowercase, for a modern feel, with “data” in white to make it pop away from the screen and the red type.
