The Client
SchoolOps NYC is the brainchild of Ivy League graduate Karen Palmer. Karen was the founding director of operations for Lefferts Gardens Charter School in Brooklyn from 2010-2013, and has been serving multiple independent and network-affiliated schools as an operations consultant since then. She has provided direct assistance and counsel to elementary, middle, and high schools in all five boroughs of New York City, and also in New York State.
The Challenge
Karen needed a straightforward, eye-catching logo and website to promote her business. She works largely with schools serving children of color, and wanted photos reflecting that demographic. She also wanted to offer signups to her newsletter.
The Solution
The logo needed to be catchy yet businesslike. I used a strong sans serif typeface to connote stability and give a modern feel. The typeface is relatively straightforward but with a distinctive quirk in the lowercase “l” that wraps comfortably around the “O” next to it. “NYC” is in school bus yellow.
To keep things simple, we decided on a one-page website with several different sections. Using the Squarespace platform, I used stock and custom photos to give the feel of exuberant classrooms and a well-functioning school, and Karen supplied me with carefully honed copy.
