The Client
The GLBT Historical Society: Museum and Archives collects, preserves, exhibits and makes accessible to the public materials and knowledge to support and promote understanding of LGBTQ history, culture and arts in all their diversity. Founded in 1985, they are recognized internationally as a leader in the field of LGBTQ public history.
The Challenge
The GLBT Historical Society needed:
- Branding for PDF “sponsorship kits” containing promotional material and an interactive reply form, which go out to likely donors, both corporate and individual—including kits specific to upcoming museum exhibitions
- Branding for quarterly event brochures, which are available as printed pieces at the Museum
- Website, social media and print graphics
Projects for this ongoing client need to inspire curiosity about and trust in the Historical Society and its contributions to the LGBTQ communities; to attract an audience—and funding—for events and exhibitions; and to give a sense of the Society’s variety of experience.
The Solution
Working within brand guidelines, I used clean, bold type and bursts of color—the blue, orange, turquoise, gold and rose from the logo—as accents.
For imagery I had access to the Society’s full archives—more than 3,500 linear feet of storage. This wealth of material meant I was able to make precise selections for subject and format (e.g. historical vs. present-day; photos vs. film stills vs. artifacts; color vs. black and white). I worked with the Executive Director, Development Director, Program Manager and Director of Exhibitions and Museum Operations to write and refine copy.
