The Client
Applied Biosystems is one of the various brands under the Life Technologies brand of Thermo Fisher Scientific corporation. The brand is focused on integrated systems for genetic analysis, which include computerized machines and the consumables used within them (such as reagents). I worked as a contract Senior Designer on an in-house design team.
The Challenge
Applied Biosystems needed a wide variety of materials, from mailers to brochures to trade show properties. The materials needed to communicate the corporate brand—exciting, first-in-class analysis systems (machines and software) and consumables—to scientific, marketing and internal audiences.
The Solution
Working within existing brand standards, I collaborated with art directors, account executives, project managers, copywriters and scientists to design, produce and manage conference materials for 4-6 domestic and global events per year: booths, direct mail, seminar papers, scientific abstract books, web banners, and giveaways. In addition, I created print, PDF and web materials including brochures, data sheets, white papers, direct mail, employee communications materials, email headers, and icons. I also created an onboarding legal guide for Intellectual Property (IP) to ensure that new employees follow best practices.
“Analytica” Industry Event
Applied Biosystems needed a trade show booth that underscored its industry-leading position and allowed for multiple interaction points. Working cooperatively with an art director, copywriter, and project manager and with input from appropriate scientists, I created the artwork for the booth, from the banners to the panel graphics. I also worked with vendors to complete the project. Some great feedback:
I cannot say enough about the fantastic job the events team did at this conference. Applied Biosystems was everywhere, and tastefully, in just the right dose.

Events Design Style Guide
The Applied Biosystems Events Design Style Guide was an essential tool for the design, editorial and marketing departments, as well as for outside vendors. I created the lie-flat book to provide specifications for type, copy, color, photography and property styling — taking the guesswork out of trade show booth design and production. After the introduction of this piece, we were able to shave off up to a week of production time.
Conference Collateral
Following brand standards, I created this conference collateral: a brochure that doubled as a seminar paper listing, a mailer about workshops at an upcoming conference, and a prize giveaway notice for use in a trade show booth—enabling a consistent look and feel for the company’s industry-facing presence.
New Employee Onboarding Legal Guide
I designed this brochure, including the icons, as a legal guide covering general legal, patent awareness, invention management, and information assurance; the pages below are from a chapter concerning intellectual property. The brochure was mandatory reading for all new hires.
