Google is killing off its beloved Reader, much to the dismay of the community that has grown up around the web-based program that let people subscribe to news feeds from their favorite sites. It will close up shop on July 1, 2013.
But according to Twitter pundit Marco Arment, the death of Google Reader will leave the field open again for smaller desktop RSS clients: “It may suck in the interim before great alternatives mature and become widely supported, but in the long run, trust me: this is excellent news.”
A good alternative, according to Scott Beale, another Twitterer, is NewsBlur. Also (in beta) is The Old Reader.
